A reference picture selection method for efficiently providing reference picture information used for motion compensation is provided to determine reference picture index according to a coding mode when coding picture having frame/field macroblock. A first reference field picture index and a second reference field picture index about macroblock are obtained. The first reference frame picture is determined based on value and the first reference frame picture index dividing the obtained first reference field picture index from the first reference frame picture list. The second reference frame picture is determined based on value and the second reference frame picture index dividing the obtained second reference field picture index from the second reference frame picture list. The first reference field picture about macroblock is selected based on the obtained first reference field picture index and determined first reference frame picture. The second reference field picture about macroblock is selected based on the obtained second reference field picture index and determined second reference frame picture.
