Process for the preparation of dihydroxy esters and derivatives thereof

A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I) which comprises either the stereoselective reduction of a compound of formula (II) to produce a compound of formula (III), and esterification of the a compound of formula (III) to produce a compound of formula (I), or esterification of a compound of formula (II) to produce a compound of formula (IV) and the stereoselective reduction of a compound of formula (IV) to produce a compound of formula (I), wherein X represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl linking group, R and R'' each independently represent an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, and R' represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl preferably an optionally substituted alkyl group. Described is a compound of formula (I) too.
