A portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to remove inconvenience that the portable terminal touches an ear of a user continuously during a call. When call connection is initiated, a mode of a portable terminal is converted from a normal mode into a speaker mode(S203, S205). When a call is performed, it is checked whether the speaker mode is released(S209, S211). When release of the speaker mode is requested, the speaker mode is released. And the call is continuously performed in a normal mode(S213).
