The device has a heat exchanger (1) for recovering heat energy on an exhaust line (3) i.e. double-walled line, where the heat exchanger is in helical form with turns or in cylindrical envelope form. The exchanger is formed from a duct, where the heat-transfer liquid e.g. water, circulates. The exchanger is integrally housed between a heat shield (14) and the line. A solenoid valve (6) connects the exchanger to a heating circuit i.e. radiator, or to a coolant compensation circuit (4). The shield presents an aluminum sheet with a thermal insulation fiber layer.
