The method involves directly or indirectly introducing gaseous fuel quantity in a combustion chamber (12) to obtain a homogeneous or stratified air-fuel mixture in the chamber during a compression phase of an internal combustion engine. The air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug (24), and another gaseous fuel quantity is introduced in the chamber to obtain another air-fuel mixture in the chamber during an expansion phase of the engine. Combustion of the latter air-fuel mixture is obtained by a self-ignition resulting from combustion of the former air-fuel mixture.
