PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display device or the like which is capable of reducing a current flowing in response to application of an AC voltage or the like. SOLUTION: With respect to an alternating voltage, a pulsed voltage +V1 rising in a positive direction is first applied for a time T2 as shown in Fig.5(a). When a time T3 (a prescribed time, a pause time) passes after the completion of the application of the voltage of +V1, application of a pulsed voltage -V1 rising in a negative direction is started. The application time of the pulsed voltage -V1 is equal to the application time T2 of the pulsed voltage +V1. When a time T3 passes after the completion of the application of the pulsed voltage -V1, application of the pulsed voltage +V1 is started again. In this embodiment, application of the pulsed voltage +V1, passage of the time T3, application of the pulsed voltage -V1, and passage of the time T3 are taken as one unit, and the one unit is repeated a plurality of times.
