PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely avoid surge of a turbocharger in relation to a control device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine provided with the turbocharger and an exhaust variable valve gear capable of varying at least open timing of an exhaust valve, filling efficiency improving control improving filling efficiency by using scavenging effect is executed by changing exhaust valve opening timing so as to make a minimum point of pulsation of exhaust port pressure coincide with a valve overlap period during which exhaust valve opening period and intake valve opening period overlap during heavy load operation. When it is detected that it is under a condition where effect of filling efficiency improving control declines, rise of supercharging pressure is suppressed during execution of filling efficiency improving control.
