The module (10) has a signal contact (14) functioning as a digital input and connected to a sensor (18) that is connected to a digital input channel. An electrical source (30) is provided for evaluation of status of the sensor, where the electrical source is designed as a clocked constant current source. The source is provided for delivering electric current to the sensor and to an electrical component provided in an evaluation path over the signal contact, where the evaluation path extends between the signal contact and a ground contact. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a peripheral module.
