PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproduction device and a reproduction method which can surely make a minor understand a message for informing a partner of defective reproduction by means of the parental function of an optical disk. SOLUTION: The reproduction device includes: a setting part (12) which sets one level out of a plurality of levels as the level of the reproduction control information in the reproduction device; a selection part (12) which prepares a plurality of messages corresponding to the plurality of levels of the reproduction control information and selects one message which corresponds to the level set by the setting part; a reading-out part (14) which reads out data recorded on a recording medium; reproduction parts (16, 17) which reproduce the data read out by the reading-out part; and a control part (11) which, when the reading-out part reads out the level of the reproduction control information on the recording medium, compares the level of the reproduction control information on the recording medium with the level of the reproduction control information on the reproduction device, which is set by the setting part, stops the data reproduction of the reproduction part according to the result of the comparison, and outputs image information for displaying the message selected by the selection part.
