PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable magnetic recording medium where the concave portions of a recording layer formed in a concavo-convex pattern is filled with a DLC filler and the filler is less likely to exfoliate, and to provide a method for manufacturing such a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 10 includes: the recording layer 14 formed over a substrate 12 in the predetermined concavo-convex pattern, convex portions of the concavo-convex pattern constituting recording elements 14A; a filler underlayer film 18 formed on the bottoms of the concave portions 16 of the concavo-convex pattern; and a DLC filler 20 formed on the filler underlayer film 18 in contact with the filler underlayer film 18 so as to fill the concave portions 16. The filler underlayer film 18 is made of a material selected from the group consisting of a Si-containing material, a Ge-containing material, and a carbide material containing one or more metal elements selected from Ti, Ta, Nb, Mo, Zr, Cr, W, V, and Hf.
