PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a sorting machine, through which mails of variable sizes, such as, parcels flow, to attain a high speed and high performance sorting by image recognition processing similar to a flat mail-sorting machine in . SOLUTION: This image input device which is shown in Figure 1 irradiates a linear beam from an illumination unit 6 toward the mail 2 that is moving in the fixed direction by a transfer conveyer 1, detects imaging distance to the mail article 2 prior to imaging, a camera unit 5 having a linear array CCD as a photoelectric conversion element performs autofocus according to the distance. The camera unit 5 converts a video signal of the mail article 2 obtained by the linear array CCD into a digital video signal, detects the envelopes of the digital video signal for the fetching direction (forward direction) of the linear array CCD and its opposite direction, and corrects the gradation and the light distribution of the digital video signal, based on the envelope detection data in both the directions.
