PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a display element using cholesteric liquid crystal at a high speed, and to easily perform assigning intensity levels using the display element that uses the cholesteric liquid crystal. SOLUTION: Negative potential is applied to a scanning electrode during the period of applying selective voltage, and subsequently positive potential is applied (shown in Fig.(A)). A positive potential is applied to a data electrode at ON-state, and subsequently negative potentia is applied thereto (shown in Fig.(B)). Meanwhile, voltage having the same waveform as that of the selective voltage is applied at OFF state (shown in Fig.(C)). When a change is made to an intermediate reflection state different from the selective reflection state or the transmission state, it is so controlled that a voltage having a frequency of polarity inversion higher than that when changing to the selective reflection state or the transmission state is applied to the data electrode (shown in Fig.(D)).
