This invention relates to methods for generating insulin-producing cells. In particular, the present invention relates to methods for generating insulin-producing cells or precursors thereof in vitro or in vivo by employing mesenchymal stem cells an pancreatic cells. Insulin-producing cells or precursors thereof created in accordance with the present methods, as well as the use of these cells in the treatment of diabetes, are also provided.
