<p>The method involves determining a charge air temperature over a temperature of an inter heat exchanger coolant flow (9). An offset is computed from a reference charge air temperature to an actual load air temperature. A reference bypass coolant flow is computed as a correcting variable from the offset over a charge air temperature controller. A control signal is determined for pressurization of an engine characteristic thermostatic valve (6) from the reference-bypass-coolant flow. A position of the engine characteristic thermostatic valve is determined over the control signal.</p>
