PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an escalator applied to all of escalators, and higher in abnormality detection accuracy than the conventional art. SOLUTION: This safety device comprises: a plurality of photoelectronic sensors 111 arranged along a traveling direction of the escalator 1; a pattern generating part 112 for generating a time-series light shielding pattern of with or without light shielding at each position on the escalator by measuring a plurality of sensor output values at regular sampling; a passenger's condition determining part 120 outputting a passenger's walking determination result 123a, a congestion degree determination result 125a, or a falling condition determination result 126, from the light shielding pattern; a warning part 113 giving warning to a passenger based on the determination result; and a control part 114 performing an operation control of the escalator based on the determination result.
