SYSTEM, METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PETROPHYSICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS AT THE DRILLING BIT

Measurement of petrophysical and geophysical data of formations (122) in a wellbore (120) using a long gauge bit (200) having at least one sensor (212, 214, 216, 218). The at least one sensor (212, 214, 216, 218) may be installed in at least one flute (204) of the long gauge bit (200) and/or in the long gauge portion (202) thereof. Data for creating images of the formations (122) are obtained at or near the bottom of the borehole. Orientation of the long gauge bit is also available on a real time basis. Magnetic and/or gravitational sensors (212, 214, 216, 218) mayb be used in determining bit orientation. The flutes (204) of the long gauge bit (200) and the long gauge portion (202) thereof may have standard inserts (216, 218) to accommodate various types of different sensors and electronic packages therefor.
