A bar-fed mechanism for an automatic lathe having a headstock 3, Fig. 1, rotating the bar 6 and cutting tools 16, 17, 21 for producing a series of identical workpieces, comprises a drum 25 containing a number of longitudinallyslotted tubes 25a, Fig. 2, each carrying a bar 6, the drum being indexable to align the tubes successively with the headstock axis. A pusher 26 is provided in each tube, and that one in the tube aligned with the headstock axis is engaged by a link 27 carried by an endless chain 28 driven by a continuously-energized electric motor 31, thus urging the bar towards the headstock. When the bar has been substantially used, the link passes around chain-wheel 29 and draws the pusher and bar-end away from the headstock until the link 27 engages cam 47, Fig. 4, and is disconnected from the pusher. As the link moves around chain-wheel 30, it depresses lever 48 to release detent 51, thus allowing the drum to be turned by weight 33 to bring another tube into alignment with the headstock. The link moves on to engage the pusher of that tube to feed the bar therein, and this is repeated until all the bars have been used. Specifications 917,158 and 917,159 are referred to. |
