<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display, particularly an IPS (in-plane switching) mode liquid crystal display improved in brightness uniformity of a display area. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes a substrate including a plurality of gate lines and data lines intersected to each other to form a pixel; a substrate opposed to the substrate; a common electrode including a first portion having a slit corresponding to one data line, and a second portion located inside the pixel; and a pixel electrode located between the first portion and the second portion and adjacent to the first portion. The first portion is located at a first distance dl from the pixel electrode, and the second portion is located at a second distance d2 from the pixel electrode.
