PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent contrast medium having low toxicity and excellent water solubility, and exhibiting high clustering around a tumor. SOLUTION: The fluorescent contrast medium contains a merocyanine dye [e.g. a compound represented by general formula (I) (wherein, Z1forms a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring which may be substituted with a sulfonic acid or the like; Z2forms an acidic nuclear which may be substituted with a sulfonic acid group or the like; R1is an alkyl group or the like which may be substituted with a sulfonic acid group; M1to M4are each independently a methine group or the like; m is 0 or 1; n is an integer of 0-4; CI is an ion for neutralizing charge; and y is the number of CIs required for neutralizing the charge)] as an effective ingredient.
