A diagnostic field device (50) for coupling to a two-wire process control loop (18) of an industrial process control or monitoring system (10) includes digital communication monitoring circuitry (52) which is configured to couple to the two-wire process control loop (18). The digital communication monitoring circuitry (52) is configured to receive a digital communication signal from the two-wire process control loop (18). Timing circuitry (56) in the diagnostic field device (50) provides a timing output (58). Diagnostic circuitry (54) provides a diagnostic output based upon the digital communication signal and the timing output (58).
