PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparation of a protein mediated calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on a metal substrate, particularly on stainless steel (316L) by biomimetic route, enabling rapid and effective osteointegration with a host tissue following a controlled interfacial reaction.
SOLUTION: Calcium deficient carbonated hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating is developed on the metal substrate, particularly the stainless steel (316L) alloy through the biomimetic route after a surface treatment step using an aqueous solution of (4-10 wt.%) of BSA (bovine serum albumin) at room temperature. The coating is characterized with respect to phase composition, crystallinity, morphology and thickness. The protein mediated calcium phosphate ceramic coating is porous (pore diameter 100-200 μm) having uniform pore distribution and coverage.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
