PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an internal combustion engine capable of providing quick torque responsiveness while suppressing the deterioration of fuel economy. SOLUTION: In this device for controlling an internal combustion engine having an intake pipe volume changing means for changing an intake pipe volume, the presence or absence of a future torque up request is predicted (step 100). When the future torque up request is predicted to be present, the intake pipe volume changing means is so operated that the intake pipe volume is decreased for preparation of torque up (step 110).
