The sensor element (1) has inter-digital electrode system (2) with two inter-digital electrodes (3, 4) comprising electrode arms (6, 7). One of the electrode arms has a testing element. Semiconducting material (5a) and/or low conductive material is electric-conductively connected on the testing element, where the semiconducting material and/or low conductive material contacts the electrode arms in a region of 0 to 100 percentage of electrode lengths (L1, L2, LZ) of each electrode arm. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for self-diagnosing a sensor element (2) a method for detecting particles in a gas flow by a sensor element.
