PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an elevator car holding device capable of promptly stopping lifting caused by the self-traveling of a car during the maintenance work of an elevator. SOLUTION: The elevator car holding device is provided with a base 17 having a base side wall face 17a forming a wedge space 19 between the base side wall face 17a and a car guide rail 13a; a wedge block 32 arranged in the wedge space 19 so as to be movable between a car movement permitting position and a car lifting regulating position; a first movable iron plate 25 arranged so as to be movable between a first position to locate the wedge block 32 in the car movement permitting position and a second position to locate the wedge block 32 in the car lifting regulating position; a first coil spring 30a for making the first movable iron plate 25 engaged with a first support member 20 to hold the first movable iron plate 25 in the first position; a first electromagnet 22 for moving the first movable iron plate 25 to the second position resisting to an energizing force of the first coil spring 30a to hold the first movable iron plate 25 in the second position; and a current carrying means 61 for detecting the lifting of the car 4 and supplying an electric current to the electromagnet 22.
