PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spherical silsesquioxane fine particle that has an exceedingly small average value of a particle size and an exceedingly narrow particle size distribution and a surface modifier for a polymer material composed of the spherical silsesquioxane fine particle. SOLUTION: The spherical silsesquioxane fine particle having the average value of the particle size of 10-30 nm and a variation coefficient of particle sizes of 15% or less is produced by bringing a specific silanol-forming silicon compound into contact with a fixed amount of water in the presence of a prescribed amount of a specific acid catalyst and simultaneously carrying out hydrolysis reaction and condensation reaction at a prescribed temperature.
