PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the luminous flux maintenance factor at the time of lighting, the temporal change of color, and the color difference at a tube end, in a fluorescent lamp for backlight; and to improve the above-described characteristics of the fluorescent lamp for backlight having a color reproduction range enlarged by using an SCA (strontium chloroapatite) fluorescent substance, etc. SOLUTION: A fluorescent substance is provided, which is characterized in that the surface of a fluorescent substance particle is coated with a surface treating material containing a rare-earth metaphosphoric acid salt and a rare-earth hydroxide. A fluorescent lamp is provided, which is prepared by using the fluorescent substance, exhibits a suppressed tube end color difference at the time of lamp lighting, a high lamp lumen maintenance factor, and a small temporal change of lamp chromaticity, and therefore can be suitably used as a light source, such as, for a backlight of a colored liquid crystal display unit.
