The method involves chemical-analytical determining chemical characteristics of cellulose or paper reference sample to obtain reference values e.g. carbonyl group content and carboxyl group content. A reference parameter is generated for each reference sample by mathematical evaluation of reference data. The obtained reference parameter is correlated with reference values by performing multivariate calibration for creating a correlation model. A chemical-analytical process is selected, where the process enables quantitative determination of the reference values.
