<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide surface-hardened high strength ceramics in which the generation of cracks is suppressed, and having high toughness. <P>SOLUTION: A composite sintered compact obtained by dispersing the fine particles of a carbide(s) into a matrix composed of one or more kinds of inorganic materials selected from the group consisting of alumina, mullite, TiO<SB>2</SB>, ZrO<SB>2</SB>, Si<SB>3</SB>N<SB>4</SB>, SiC and AlN in ≥1 vol% or a sintered compact of the simple substance of the above carbide(s) is heat-treated at 1,000 to 1,400°C for 1 to 300 hr, and is thereafter irradiated with electron beams, so as to harden its surface, thus the surface-hardened high strength ceramics can be obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
