This invention provides a liquid crystal display device which is excellent in both display performance and moist heat resistance. The liquid crystal display device comprises a light source, a liquid crystal cell comprising a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer held between the pair of substrates, and a film containing a thermoplastic resin composition containing a lactone ring-containing polymer. The film is disposed in the liquid crystal cell on its side near the light source. The liquid crystal display device is characterized in that it includes a film containing a thermoplastic resin composition containing a lactone ring-containing polymer, the in-plane retardation (Re) and the through-thickness retardation (Rth) of the film are each not more than 10 nm, and an optically anisotropic layer is provided on the film.
