PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element and a cell structure capable of suppressing astigmatism as much as possible. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal optical element 1A has a composition in which two transparent substrates 11 and 12 facing each other are stacked with a sealing material 2 and a reinforcing member 21 interposed to form a gap. A liquid crystal layer 103 is provided in the region inside the sealing material 2. The sealing material 2 is formed roughly circularly to suppress astigmatism due to deformation of the sealing material 2 when the external environment changes. The liquid crystal optical element 1A comprises an inlet 3 provided by opening a portion of the sealing material 2. The sealing material 2 has a protrusion 2a at the inlet 3. The reinforcing member 21 is arranged outside the sealing material 2 in such a manner that the direction of the inlet 3 from the center of the sealing material 2 and the direction of the reinforcing member 21 from the center of the sealing material 2 meet roughly at right angles. The reinforcing member 21 is formed with a material the same as the sealing material 2 into which a spacer is mixed to define the gap between the transparent substrates. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
