PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer which can be easily formed at a low cost without needing vacuum treatment, can reliably secure satisfactory alignment properties since a surface shape is formed with satisfactory reproducibility, is easily compatible with a large-sized substrate and compatibly has high durability and light resistance and to provide a liquid crystal device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment layer has a rugged shape on its surface and its surface shape is formed by a transfer method. Thereby, satisfactory alignment properties can be reliably obtained and the inorganic liquid crystal alignment layer can be easily formed. A manufacturing device and a manufacturing process are simple and the liquid crystal alignment layer is easily compatible with a large-sized substrate at low costs with high throughput. The liquid crystal alignment layer can be made compatible with the large-sized substrate according to a roller nano imprint without extremely enlarging the manufacturing device unlike an oblique vapor deposition device and the like. Alignment control of a nematic liquid crystal, a ferroelectric liquid crystal, an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal and the like is made possible by the liquid crystal alignment layer.
