PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a weft knitting machine that reduces the size and weight of a carriage and improves knitting efficiency, and to provide a needle selection method thereof. SOLUTION: When only a cam system 13 is used, two-stage needle selection is carried out by a needle selection actuator 16 on a left side. In a left end needle selection actuator 14, preliminary needle selection is carried out during movement to the right 3R. After the reversal of traveling direction of the carriage 3, retreat needle selection not changing the preliminary needle selection state of a selector 44 is carried out. A retractable part 20a of a movable select jack lowering cam 20 is retracted. Since stationary select jack lowering cams 18 and 19 are used at both ends of the carriage 3 and do not need to be retractable for the stationary select jack stitch needle cams, the carriage is reduced in size and weight, a knitting efficiency is improved and cost reduction is achieved.
