摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video coding technology based on a human visual tolerance level. <P>SOLUTION: A method for selecting a coding mode is provided to improve visual quality of encoded video sequence. The coding mode is selected on the basis of the human visual tolerance level. Image data is received for video coding processing. Then, the image data is analyzed for determining adjustment information of the human visual tolerance level. For example, parameters of a cost equation are adjusted on the basis of the human visual tolerance level of visual sense that are permissible limits based on distortion limits permitted by the human ocular system. The image data is analyzed in locations considered to be visually sensitive regions such as a trailing suspicious region, a striping suspicious region, an image boundary region and/or a blocking suspicious region. The parameters of the cost equation are adjusted on the basis of different thresholds of the visual tolerance level, depending on what kinds of visually sensitive regions are detected in the image data.
