PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brush device that prevents damage to a brush in a state before mounting to an electric motor frame. SOLUTION: The brush device 21 is configured as follows: a carbon brush 31 is stored in a cylindrical brush holder 26 mounted to an insulating base 22, so as to be axially movable; a coil spring 35 is provided so as to be sandwiched by a rear-end face 31b of the brush and a spring bearing 24 mounted to the insulating base 22 oppositely to the rear end face 31b; and the coil spring biases the brush 31 in a direction of protruding from the brush holder 26. A relief part 27 is formed in the brush holder 26. A recessed part 32 facing the relief part 27 is provided on the side face of the brush 31. A holding member 41 is provided while having an engaging part 41b engaged with/disengaged from the recessed part 32 through the relief part 27. The engaging part 41b is engaged with the recessed part 32 so as to hold the brush 31 while preventing the brush from protruding from the brush holder 26.
