PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for severing a sliver during can replacement, particularly, which ensures rupture of the sliver in a structurally simple manner. SOLUTION: In the method for severing the sliver during the can replacement in a drawing frame having means for receiving the sliver 22 in a can 24, a space between a sliver feeder such as a sliver outlet of a coiler plate 23, and the uppermost sliver layer in the following can is increased to such an extent that the sliver ruptures. To provide a method for ensuring rupture of the sliver in a structurally simple manner, draft is increased in a draft zone b arranged at the front stage of a sliver outlet to initiate the can replacement when a thin sliver location 12' is provided in a deposited sliver and the thin sliver location is about to the outlet zone of the sliver outlet of a coiler plate.
