PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately and simply obtain the bending resistance life of a waveguide without requiring much labor or time. SOLUTION: The waveguide 62 is bent into a U shape to fix its one end to a slide rod 18 while its other end is fixed to a sample fixing rod 28 and the slide rod 18 is reciprocally moved to repeatedly bend the waveguide 62. Light is applied to the end edge 62 of the bent part 62A of the waveguide 62 and the reflected scattered light is thrown on a television camera 58 to be photographed as a light spot. If the light spot is once detected during one reciprocating period of the slide rod 18, the waveguide 62 is determined to be bent once to perform count-up. Since the light spot is shifted or not imaged when the waveguide 62 is broken, the waveguide 62 is judged to be broken by subjecting the photographed image to image processing to detect the presence or positional shift of the light spot and the counted value amount to the number of times of the bending life (bending resistance life) of the waveguide 62.
