PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a main rope abnormality determining device for elevator capable of accurately detecting a catch and a cut of a main rope caused by an earthquake. SOLUTION: This device for determining abnormality of an elevator due to a catch and a cut of a main rope comprises balances 61 respectively provided in all of a plurality of main ropes 3, which are fitted to a car 4 or a counterweight so as to suspend the car 4 or the counterweight, so as to detect a load to be applied to the main ropes, a memory section 12 storing a change of a balance value, which is output from the balance in the normal state of the main rope following a change of a load inside of the car, as an ideal value, and a balance value determining section 13 for determining abnormality of the main rope when real balance values from all the balances are not included in a regulation range set based on the ideal balance value corresponding to the load inside of the car among the ideal values stored in the memory section.
