PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brush bristle material having a superior cleaning function and an indicator function capable of accurately acquiring a decline degree of the cleaning function, and allowing the easy determination of a replacement time; and a brush using the brush bristle material. SOLUTION: In the brush bristle material 1 formed of cut bristles of synthetic resin monofilaments, a cross-section perpendicular to the length direction of the cut bristle is formed of a deformed cross-sectional shape formed by connecting a plurality of unit cross section elements 3 via a connection portion 4 and, when the diameter of the unit cross section element 3 and the thickness of the connection portion 4 are defined as D and T, respectively, a value of T/D is within the range of 0.2-0.8.
