Method, system and software for screening an image

A method for screening an image, comprising pixels, prior to printing the image using a variable exposure level printer capable of printing at a plurality of exposure levels is provided. The method comprises providing a plurality of exposure level screening matrices for screening pixels of the image. Each matrix is associated with a different printing exposure level and includes a set of threshold values for screening a corresponding set of pixels in the image. Each pixel of the image is to be printed as a continuous tone (CT) value. The method further comprises determining the exposure level at which a pixel should be printed or whether should not be printed by comparing the CT value of each pixel with its corresponding threshold value from any one or more of the matrices.
