A method for registering an image in the telephone directory of a portable terminal and an apparatus therefor are provided to enable a user to search a phone number of the other party more easily by matching the phone number with an face image. If an image registration signal is sensed, a controller displays an image registration menu on a screen(S408). If a user selects a face image registration menu, the controller detects a face region from images stored in an image album or images photographed on the screen in a preview mode(S411). After a face region capture image is produced, the controller registers the face region capture image in the telephone directory.
