An apparatus for providing a variable voltage for a cable test and a control method thereof are provided to apply voltage and current, thereby testing a cable without an additional large power supply, large voltage boosting or dropping transformer. A power supply device comprises an environment test pressure container(100) and a current application circuit(200). The environment test pressure container fixes a cable sample(110). The current application circuit comprises a large current supply unit(210) and a high voltage supply unit(220). The large current supply unit supplies large current to the cable sample. The high voltage supply unit supplies high voltage to the cable sample. The current application circuit varies and provides high voltage and large current by using commercial power in both sides of the cable sample.
