An optical pickup device, an optical recording medium driving apparatus, and a signal recording/reproducing method are provided to suppress that the light from the recorded/reproduced layer of an optical recording medium having a plurality of recording layers is influenced by the other layers on the optical detector. An optical pickup device comprises a light source emitting laser beam, an illuminating unit condensing the laser beam coming out from the light source on an optical recording medium, a retardation unit(26) generating a phase difference between first and second light, which enter at least two regions of the optical recording medium, in order to offset each other, and an optical detector which receives the laser beam coming out from the retardation unit.
