摘要 A system for determining a three dimensional (3D) representation of an object or scene comprises one or more light sources and one or more two-dimensional (2D) image capture devices arranged such that multiple images are captured, each of which shows the scene illuminated differently. Various means are described for coupling the illumination and image capture to associate images with the particular light source and/or location from which the image was taken, for analysis to determine an approximate three dimensional surface of the scene, as in photometric stereo systems. The light sources may be polarized, and illumination light intensity may vary gradually with time. One of the illumination sources can be natural light. Location sensors may determine the positions of the light sources and/or image capture cameras. Some light sources may be outside the visible spectrum e.g. infrared, and the image capturing and 3D processing means may be combined in a common, integral device. Illumination may be varied by mechanical means such as shutters, or electronically. In particular, the present system overcomes existing limitations by allowing illumination of the scene so it appears lit naturally using substantially "white" light.
