A thermal printer improving the performance of the thermal printer and reducing the cost is provided to allow the thermal printer to handle roll paper of which width is different from each other. A supporting member(13) pivotally supports roll paper of which width are 3 kinds of difference. A delivering apparatus(14) includes a carrier roller(14a) which collects the recording paper(P1) rolled with each roll paper. A guide member guides recording paper from three kinds of roll paper. A platen roller is contacted on the thermal head in a state inserting the recording paper guided by the guide member. A controller(17) controls the rotational direction of the platen roller and carrier roller based on the detection result of a sensor. The controller performs the control operation by operating the heat generation element of the thermal head as the number corresponding to the width of the transmitted recording paper.
