A digital image processing apparatus including a self-timer photographing function and an operation method thereof are provided to photograph a desired subject through the self-timer photographing function after other subjects are out of a focusing area when they are recognized in front of the desired subject. A self-timer photographing function is performed by the selection of a user(601). A digital signal processing unit detects the first focusing value of a live view image(603), and then determines whether two-thirds of the set time for the self-timer photographing elapses(605). If so, the digital signal processing unit detects the second focusing value of the live view image(609) and then determines whether the difference between the first and second focusing values is bigger than a reference value(611). The digital signal processing unit normally photographs the live view image after the set time for the self-timer elapses(613).
