The sensor (10) has an adjustable transmitter amplifier (22) and a receiver amplifier (30), and an adjusting device (34) for adjusting transmitter and receiver gains. An evaluation device (32) continuously evaluates traffic environment in a motor vehicle and operates relative to the actual evaluation of the adjusting device. Multiple antennas (12) generate multiple angularly offset radar beams (16). The evaluation device and the adjusting device adjust the gain for the different antennas independent of each other.
