The device has a determination module (25a) determining clogging of a fuel filter (16) from an integral component of a proportional integral derivative (PID) regulator type regulation unit (25), when average values of the integral component are higher than respective maximum thresholds. The determination module evaluates the integral component of the adjusting module in a cyclic manner for stabilized functioning phases. An alert module (30) alerts a driver for the detection of the clogging of the fuel filter by the determination module. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting clogging of a fuel filter of a fuel supply system in an internal combustion engine.
