A portable terminal and a method for controlling a volume for a video call are provided to enable a user to enjoy a video call conveniently without additionally controlling a volume. If a user image according to a video call is inputted by a camera module, a controller analyzes a size of the inputted user image(S503, S504). The controller searches a distance value between a user and the camera module corresponding to the size of the analyzed image(S505). The controller controls a speaker volume of an acoustic sound output module and a microphone volume of a mic module to correspond to the searched distance value(S506).
