[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVIII] To compensate for variations in the quantity per unit length of a tobacco stream of constant width on a travelling band 2, Fig. 3, the stream is trimmed by coacting rotary discs 12 to a crossseetional size determined by the position of an opposed section 13 of the band support bed vertically adjustable under the control of a device arranged to measure the quantity of tobacco in a part of the stream upstream or downstream of the discs 12. As described, the stream is formed by showering tobacco from a hopper on to the band 2, and the trimmed stream passes to a travelling paper web for wrapping therein to form a continuous cigarette rod, the trimmed-off tobacco being returned to the hopper. The bed section 13 is an elongated member with ramp portions fore and aft and is adjusted through two spaced rods 21 thereon joined by a bracket 20 having screwed engagement with a spindle 19 chain-driven from a servomotor 14 via a reduction gear 15. The measuring device 25, Fig. 4, supplies an electric current whose voltage and strength are determined by the quantity per unit length of the tobacco stream and which via an amplifier 26 and an integrator 27 causes to be available across the output terminals of an indicator 28 a positive or negative voltage according as the actual average stream quantity per unit length measured over about one second is higher or lower than a desired average stream quantity per unit length. During approximately onesecond intervals whilst a machine-driven cam 40 closes a switch 39, this voltage, if above a predetermined value, acts according to its sign and through a biased relay 35 to close contacts 36, 37 or 36, 38 and via switchgear 29 or 30 drive the motor 14 in one or other direction.
