A process for producing a high-molecular aromatic polycarbonate through melting which is reduced in the content of high-melting components, is reduced in heat history, and has an excellent hue. The process is for producing an aromatic polycarbonate from an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a carbonic diester as raw materials with two or more reactors, and is characterized in that the temperature of a liquid reaction mixture in at least one reactor (A), T1 (°C), and the temperature of a liquid reaction mixture in a reactor (B) succeeding the reactor (A), T2 (°C), satisfy the relationship T2<T1 and that in the reactor to which a liquid reaction mixture having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.1 dl/g or higher is fed, the evaporation surface area of the liquid reaction mixture per unit processing amount is 1.0 m2.hr/m3 or larger.
